The Northern Pike

July 9, 2013

We spent the weekend in Amery with J and her cousins, a last hurrah before we say goodbye to her tomorrow.  J was the only who had been on this kind of trip, so there were some “firsts” for the cousins.  They really loved fishing and enjoyed eating the tasty morsel of fish Dan was able to extract and grill from the sunnies they caught (picture a dime on a grill).  They also enjoyed their first experience in a canoe.  They were so eager to try the canoe that they beat me down to the dock and were well on their way to the middle of the lake (wearing life jackets of course) by the time I got outside.  I was startled to see that the three of them were canoeing standing up, gondola style, and on the verge of tipping.  “You are supposed to do it sitting down, ” I screamed, and the three dropped to their bottoms just in time.  They proceeded to spin the canoe in circles as they each paddled a different direction.  For first timers, I would declare it a success.

Charlie’s big success was catching a northern pike.  For two years, undaunted by an almost exclusive catch of sunnies, he has been stating, “I am going for the northern pike.”  Well, his dream came true.

And, come to think of it, with this colorful crew of happy campers, mine did too.

Yay Charlie! Now he can help Sam go for a muskie. Looks like a fun weekend! Also, I love Elisabeth photobombing Charlie’s picture 🙂
