Happy Halloween (does God mind?)

October 31, 2012

With some misgivings about this dark holiday, we have gone ahead and embraced Trick or Treating.  For the last 364 days the children have been anxiously awaiting this amazing tradition.  To my dismay, about a month ago Elisabeth started saying that she was going to be a witch this year, so she could jump out and scare people!  I have no idea where this desire to scare people is coming from, except that we all know there are few things more fun than jumping out and scaring people.  We had a long talk about it, and I explained that we want to stay away from anything evil.  We don’t even want to pretend to be something evil.  But there are plenty of things that God made that are not evil at all but are kind of scary like spiders and bats.  And the Bible says that all of creation declares the Glory of God.  So I present to you: a Christian dinosaur, a born-again Lion, a surly giraffe (we are not sure about the state of the giraffe’s heart today), and a very sweet gourd*.  This morning, riding to the Wild Rumpus in her lion costume, Elisabeth exclaimed, “I’m so glad God made Halloween!”  That’s one way to look at it.

*Thanks to Bumpa Widdifield for taking their picture.

I think Miss P. and I feel the same way about Halloween – we’ll tolerate it but we won’t necessarily enjoy it. Happy Harvest Party Day! (as Katie’s Christian preschool refers to it…) And great pictures.

Thank you for sharing your misgivings about Halloween! I really struggle with this “holiday”, and have been really unsure how to explain it all to Lily. Thankfully, she is sick! So now the whole thing can be avoided altogether. Now we postpone all the stuff til next year….!

The best cute-kids-in-costume picture, for sure!
