Birth Announcement (from Dan)

May 29, 2012

“Dear Friends and Family,

It was 7:55am, Monday, May 28 when Anna (“Annie”) Frances Olson first saw the light of day. She met the air with 7 lbs, 7 oz. of girl, topping the weight of her sisters (Mary Patience weighed in at 6 lbs, 14 oz and Elisabeth at 3 lbs, 9 oz.). Charlie received the news of girl #3 with great bitterness, suggesting that as it was just another girl we did not even need to give her a name. (Sorry Charlie, it looks like you’ll be playing tackle alone with daddy).

The Lord answered our prayers for a safe delivery and also my prayer that I would not take a nap at the wrong time. But high on caffeine, I had trouble staying serious. Twice the night nurse came in thinking Lucy was crying because her laughing got so loud. However, I think my excellent coaching deserves partial credit for a quicker labor (14 hours) than last time (40 hours).

Thankfully, I was able to sober up and be attentive to the miracle towards the end. As another Annie (Dillard) notes, a maternity ward demands our reverence and awe, as “this is where the people come out.”

A word about her name:

Anna means “grace” or “favored by God” and was the name of my (Dan’s) great-grandmother, and one of Lucy’s closest cousins. It is also the name of the Godly woman in Luke 2:36-38, who “never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying…” and who “gave thanks to God and spoke about the child [Jesus Christ] to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.”

Frances means “free man, from France”! Neither of these is true of Annie, but Frances was the name of Lucy’s paternal grandmother, whom Lucy never got a chance to meet. Our prayer is that Annie’s life might reflect the character and memory of her great grandmother and we look forward to their introduction in heaven.

We rejoice that God has entrusted Annie to our care, and we pray He will use our family to point her to the glory and treasure of Christ. Born yesterday into this world, may she one day be born again by God’s grace.

Really Tired,

Dan”

Oh, congratulations, Dan! And Lucy, too, of course, who did all the hard work. Your post brought a tear to my eye, Dan. You haven’t lost your facility for communication, even as tired as you must be. Looks like Annie has that yawning thing down pat. I wish you all the best!

How sweet and precious she looks. Lucy, you look amazing, too. I am so thrilled with Annie’s name. My mother would be pleased to know that you have used her name. By the way, mother’s sister’s name was Annalee and we called her “aunt Annie.”
