A Day in the Life of the Elves

December 7, 2011

Today was a good day for the elves.  It was a better day than yesterday.  Yesterday, Charlie had his eyes dilated.  He was nervous, but Elisabeth promised to sit with him in the big chair and hold his hand.  He climbed up bravely patting the seat and inviting, “Come on up, Lisabeth!”  It was pretty traumatic but the visit ended with the good news that he no longer has to wear an eye patch.  We celebrated with a post-supper lollipop.

We had to drive J. downtown for an appointment this morning (I tell you being in foster care is nearly a full time job for a child, she is averaging 4 appointments a week outside of her regular school day), so I took the little elves to Macy’s to walk through the 8th floor exhibit:

They were very nervous about the proposed trip, asking me at least 20-30 times if the elves would be real or  just pretend.  What child wouldn’t be nervous when confronted with sights of crazed little elves, such as this one,  furiously making toys:

But I think they enjoyed it, in their cautious fashion.  The event ends in a visit with Santa.  Elisabeth prepared me ahead of time that she might look at Santa but probably wouldn’t speak to him as she says she “preferves” talking when no one is listening.  She put her Christmas request in with Charlie who usually speaks for the two of them in public.  Much to her delight, this Santa has a voice even softer than hers.  I could barely hear him, but she lit right up when he opened his mouth and little sound came out.  She cozied right up and bravely stated her Christmas wish.  Here they are, boldly getting closer than they have ever gotten before.

Miss P even gave Santa a big hug.  For which she was rewarded with a Christmas Tree cookie, which she clearly enjoyed:

To be honest, the parking ramp and walk across the skyway were of more interest to them than the Macy’s exhibit.  Perhaps next time we will just visit the parking ramp.

P.S. After a second view of this entry I wanted to say that the shot of Elisabeth on Santa’s lap shows a strong resemblance to the old photo of your grandmother as a little girl. . .

Lucy! Isaiah and Charissa and I went tonight and it was lots of fun! Fun to see your pictures from it as well. Can you believe that Isaiah and Charissa actually sat on Santa’s lap and told him what they wanted for Christmas too? 🙂 🙂
