Eye Exam

May 16, 2011

Today Charlie had an appointment with a pediatric opthomologist.  I dared to take Elisabeth.  She hasn’t been allowed to join us for the eye exam since Charlie’s first when she shouted out all the answers on eye chart before he even had a chance, forcing us to reschedule when he could come alone and not cheat.  But she has matured since December and reined herself in, watching his eye exam with rapt attention and whispering loudly every few minutes, “I wonder if Charlie’s is going to cry?” Charlie did not cry, in fact he was cheerful throughout, reading the letters on the eye chart, “I think that letter is called an H.” and asking politely as the letters got smaller, “Could you just make that letter a little bigger so I can see it?”

Also interesting was the offer of a wheelchair for the twins by the security guard who, observing me struggling to manage the children and my coffee, opened the door for us as we entered the clinic. The twins climbed right up into the wheelchair without batting an eye.  I wheeled them down to the doctor’s office as Charlie shouted to each person we passed, “Hey, my legs aren’t working!” I’m thinking of trading in my stroller for one of these:
